Use the MetalSite weight calculator to estimate a load from its geometry and selected density. Record the dimensions and assumptions alongside the result.
State the unit in full
- One metric tonne is 1,000 kg.
- One US short ton is 2,000 avoirdupois pounds, or 907.18474 kg.
- One avoirdupois pound is 0.45359237 kg.
- One metre is 1,000 millimetres.
A quotation saying only “ton” needs clarification. Precious-metal troy units are different from the avoirdupois units above.
Use compatible dimensions
For a rectangular solid, estimated mass equals length × width × thickness × density. Convert every dimension to metres when density is in kg/m³. Hollow sections require the metal’s cross-sectional area rather than the outside envelope.
Check a simple example
Using an assumed density of 7,850 kg/m³, a 2 m × 1 m × 0.003 m steel sheet has an estimated mass of 47.1 kg. SSAB gives approximately 7.85 g/cm³ for steel; actual density depends on the material.
Agree the settlement basis
Confirm whether the order is priced on theoretical or measured net mass, how packaging and tare are handled, and what weighing evidence will be used. Estimates do not replace weighing or transport load checks.
This replaces the old Toolbox’s disconnected calculator and converter links with a guide to the current calculator.
