Cold rolled steel: a sourcing checklist

Specify grade, dimensions, finish, coil requirements and evidence for cold rolled sheet or coil.

Updated 1 min read

Cold rolling reduces the thickness of previously hot-rolled material at a lower processing temperature. The finished supply still needs a complete grade and delivery specification. “Cold rolled” alone is not a grade.

Start with the application and standard

Tell the supplier what forming, joining or finishing the material will undergo. ASTM A1008/A1008M is one specification covering several categories of cold-rolled steel sheet. Select the applicable standard, grade and edition with the responsible technical person; do not assume a grade from the product name.

Describe sheet or coil

  • Thickness, width and sheet length, with the applicable tolerances.
  • Required surface finish, oiling or other surface treatment.
  • For coils: inside diameter, maximum outside diameter, permitted coil mass and edge requirements.
  • Flatness, surface acceptance and packaging requirements.
  • Mechanical properties and documents required for the application.

Check the actual lot

Request photographs and the material identification before dispatch. Match the agreed certificate to the supplied heat or coil. Clarify any surface defects, short lengths or secondary condition in writing.
